January Informational Writing

Our class continues to work hard on informational writing.  Informational writing doesn't sound like it would be something fun to learn...but it is in kindergarten!   Below we are practicing with Mat Man, a character that is part of the Handwriting Without Tears Program.

This is a video of Mat Man being made while listening to the Mat Man song. It's not our class, but will give you an idea of how Mat Man is made.

Each student found enough parts to build Mat Man. After, we built Mat Man while listening to the song.  Students then wrote about Mat Man in their journals...what does he look like?  What do his parts help him do?

Lauryn and Sadie work to make sure they
have all the correct pieces to make Mat Man.

Each Mat Man looked a little different because students
found their own eyes and nose for their Mat Man.

Charlie and Josh work on building Mat Man.

Joseph adds on the feet to complete Mat Man.

Once everyone collected the correct pieces, we built Mat
Man while listening to  his song.

We have been learning all about penguins in the last two weeks.  Our class is reading non-fiction books, watching videos and completing a WebQuest as we learn about penguins. Below are some examples of our latest informational writing.

Penguins can toboggan on the ice and penguins are fish eaters too.

In the computer lab, we used the computer program Kid Pix to draw and label
the body parts of a penguin. Students also typed their name using a text box.

Back in the classroom, we colored our penguins to save on the cost of
printing in color. We also wrote the labels for our penguin's body parts.

We will continue to learn about penguins and other Arctic animals in the weeks to come.
